After taking hundreds of shots using manual-auto-priority mode, it dawned on me my shots would probably come out better if I optimised the images using Nikon’s picture controls.
What seems to work for the photo-web-journal type shots I like doing is to bump up the sharpness, contrast and saturation. The D40x doesn’t you bracket for exposure or for D-lighting. There is no Active-D-lighting as found on the D60 and up. D-lighting is a post-processing step and one can choose hi, normal or lo. I usually try to over-expose the shot, then apply either normal or hi D-lighting.
